Martin Lewis has warned there is a common mistake people make when they get scam emails and text messages which could make you more vulnerable.
The Money Saving Expert founder says people are right not to fall for the same, but one simple mistake could mean you get targeted more often.
Taking to Twitter to hand out his latest advice, Martin said the worst thing you can do is hit ‘unsubscribe’ on a scam email or STOP on a scam text.
Many people get emails and texts that pretend to be from legitimate sources – but if you hit unsubscribe that can open you to more problems.
Martin tweeted: “Especially DON’T CLICK UNSUBSCRIBE… that just lets the scammers know they’ve hit an active email address (same applies to scam texts, don’t reply stop, it just tells them the number works).
“Forward these scam emails to report@phishing.gov.uk then delete.”
In December the police fraud report system, Action Fraud, reported seeing 305 cases of phishing scams pretending to be Martin Lewis – in just one week, reports The Mirror.
A statement from the department said: “Action Fraud has received 305 reports about fake emails purporting to be from Martin Lewis.
“A significant uplift has been noted in the number of phishing emails related to Martin Lewis, a well-known financial advisor on social media.
