Patra Chawl Scam: Patra Chawl Land Scam explained; Here’s what led to Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut’s arrest

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Monday arrested Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut in connection to the Patra Chawl land scam case.

Earlier on, the agency had carried out searches before summoning him to the agency’s South Mumbai office in the evening for questioning.

Sources said a team of about a dozen officers reached his residence around 7.30 am. Subsequently, Raut was summoned to the agency’s Ballard Pier office. He was placed under arrest at midnight after failing to cooperate during the probe, sources said.

The Patra Chawl scam allegedly involves a subsidiary of Limited (HDIL), called Guru Ashish Construction (GAC).

According to a Times Now report, HDIL had taken a loan of Rs 6,700 crore from the PMC Cooperative Bank. However, a huge sum of money accounting for Rs 2,700 crore was laundered which ultimately led to the collapse of the bank.

The GAC had signed an agreement with MHADA (Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority) and Patra Chawl society. The contract included building flats for MHADA and providing flats to nearly 672 tenants. The remaining area was to be sold by the developer.

The GAC, however, sold the space to nine developers for a sum of Rs 901.79 crore. “Over and above this, GAC also launched one project, Meadows, and took the booking amount of around Rs 138 crore from flat buyers. If one adds the two, the total proceeds of crime stand at Rs 1039.79 crore,” reported…
