Winston-Salem phone scammers claim to be from IRS or bank

Winston-Salem Police Department detectives released a warning about phone scams Thursday.Detectives are investigating a series of scams involving a caller who claims to be with the IRS or a bank.The scammer tells victims that an additional stimulus check was deposited into their account and they should pay the money back or their account will be frozen.The scammer then directs the victim to wire money to a specific location.Several of these fraudulent calls are coming from 336-462-8882. The scammer typically targets elderly people.WSPD reminds the public that calls like this are scams and government agencies or financial institutions will never ask for money over the phone.“Do not comply with the directions provided by the caller,” detectives warn.If you receive a call like the ones described above, the Criminal Investigations Division recommends taking these steps:Ask for as much information as possible. Ask for the caller’s name/alleged name. Record the number they’re calling from. Contact law enforcement authorities to file a police report.Anyone targeted by this scam should contact the Winston-Salem Police Department at 336-773-7700 or Crimestoppers at 336-727-2800.
