The Woodlands sees crime level off from 2021 spike, but fraud and scams are on the rise

Montgomery County law enforcement officials say crime is leveling off in The Woodlands after a spike in 2021 but fraud and scams are on the rise.

Capt. Tim Holifield with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office said crime has ticked back up after a drop in 2020 due to lockdown conditions related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Crimes where scammers target teens and elderly have Holifield urging residents to be aware, especially during the holiday season.

“Frauds continue to be up,” Holifield said. “The No. 1 thing we see right now is people getting scammed. Those have hit the radar in the last couple of quarters.”

Thefts in other areas, both misdemeanor and felony, have dropped along with assault family violence, burglary of a motor vehicle and criminal mischief, according to the information from the sheriff’s office in a quarterly report.

To date this year, 3 percent of the 128,366 calls for service made in The Woodlands have resulted in criminal reports filed. In September there were 11,639 calls for service with 310 actual criminal reports filed compared with 13,610 calls for service in September 2021 and 379 criminal reports filed.
