Scam involving fake checks targets businesses and banks in Campbell County

CAMPBELL COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — The Campbell County Sheriff’s Office needs the public’s help to find the people behind producing fake checks.

Deputies say the two men and a woman are behind the scam have been stealing checks from businesses in the county for the last several weeks. They then use the stolen checks to make the fake checks and try to cash them at several banks.

The sheriff’s office wants businesses to be aware of the scam and is asking them to do the following:

  • Do not leave checks at businesses in the mailbox, especially overnight
  • Keep checks secure until the mail is picked up or drop it at a pos office or USPS drop box location
  • Businesses should call law enforcement if anyone appears to bashing a suspicious check

Deputies tell WFXR News that two men and a woman behind this scam are in their 30s. The man — deputies say was producing the fake checks — was seen driving either a white Ford SUV or a black Ford SUV. The other man — said to be wearing glasses — and a woman was also seen driving the same vehicles.

If your bank or business report checks missing that were put in the mail you are asked to call your local law enforcement. You can also contact Investigator J.M. Wade at 434-332-9580 or Crime Stoppers at 1-888-798-5900.
