The scam began last spring when the woman in her 50s accepted a Facebook friend request f rom someone posing as a man living in Europe, St. Thomas police said Tuesday.
The two began regularly chatting online, police said. The man convinced the woman he was going to travel to Canada to live with her once he found financial support.
Money was sent to the man over several months, police said. With each transfer, he would create an excuse to delay meeting in person and ask the woman for more money, officers said.
Police are encouraging people to read more about online scams at antifraudcentre.ca.
“Protect yourself and your money,” police said.
