Prescott Valley Police Department recently took a debit card fraud report in which the victim’s card number was stolen and used online to purchase over $1000 worth of merchandise. Unfortunately, the victim’s bank would only reimburse 50% of the loss.
Our Crime Prevention Unit would like to remind the public of the risks involved in using debit cards to make online purchases.
- In 2020, 25% of consumers reported incidences of debit card fraud.
- Debit cards are directly linked to your bank account, which makes any money in the account susceptible to theft.
- Reimbursement for victims of debit card fraud is limited compared to victims of credit card fraud. Federal laws governing credit card fraud require financial institutions to reimburse victims for most, if not all of their loss.
Whenever you can use a credit card instead of a debit card, for online purchases, you are minimizing your risk. Regardless of whether you use debit or credit, always secure your cards in a safe place, such as an RFID blocking wallets, and sleeves to protect from prying eyes or skimmers.
