Ruja Ignatova has been on the run since 2017
MIPCOM: Independent French documentary distributor Java Films has acquired the rights to Cryptoqueen – The OneCoin Scam, which focuses on fugitive Ruja Ignatova.
The production, available as a single film and/or miniseries, offers exclusive access to close friends and colleagues of Ignatova, who disappeared after stealing up to US$15bn from investors in her cryptocurrency OneCoin, which turned out to be a Ponzi scheme.
The doc is produced by A&O Buero for Franco-German cultural broadcaster Arte and German pubcaster WDR and is directed by Johan von Mirbach. Java Films is shopping Cryptoqueen to buyers at Mipcom in Cannes this week.
Java has a long-standing partnership with Emmy-winning A&O Buero as distributor of a number of von Mirbach’s films, including the recent Smoke & Fumes – The Climate Change Cover Up.
