Hertfordshire police are highlighting an online selling site scam after several incidents in the county.
Victims advertised items such as mobile phones, laptops and computers for sale on Facebook marketplace or Gumtree.
The scammers arranged to buy the goods, however, when they arrived to collect, they showed the seller a fake screenshot showing that their bank had transferred the money but that the transaction was pending.
The suspects have used intimidation and threats to put pressure on the victims to hand over the items.
Sergeant Karen Mellor from the constabulary’s Crime Reduction and Community Safety team, said: “We would urge people to be vigilant to this type of crime. Where possible, request alternative methods of payment or make sure that the funds have fully cleared in your bank before handing the items over.
“Do not let the ‘buyer’ into your home, and if you are concerned or feel threatened, please phone the police.”
