Don’t be scammed: Scam Awareness Week November 7-11

Ipswich police are encouraging the community to learn ways to identify scams and take the time to check whether an offer is genuine before you act on it.

Scammers are getting more savvy, continually developing new ways to catch people out, taking advantage of new technology, new products, or services to create believable circumstances that manipulate people into giving over money or personal details, especially when you feel most vulnerable.

Increase your vigilance in checking for those little clues that can alert you that something is a scam.

If you are contacted by someone asking for your financial or personal details whether it be on social media, on your doorstep, or on the phone hang up and:

  • Be vigilant and if it doesn’t feel right then don’t respond, ignore suspicious emails, letters, house visit, phone calls or SMS press delete. Throw them out, shut the door or just hang up.
  • Don’t feel obligated to take a phone call if you’ve never seen the number before, let it go directly to message bank. If it is legitimate, they will leave a message.
  • Do protect your personal information on all social media platforms, and don’t share personal information online; you don’t know the identity of the person you are speaking with.
  • Always be wary of incoming calls relating to a request as scammers often impersonate providers when cold-calling people.
