Beware of scams as we approach tax season – News 40

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Bowling Green Police Department is warning you about scams and how to avoid being swindled through the Christmas and tax seasons.

Scamming is more popular during the holiday and tax season but is a year-round issue.

Oftentimes, scammers try to trick older people who may not understand technology quite as well into giving up personal information or paying money with a false promise.

A common scam involves a scammer telling a grandparent that their grandchild is in trouble and needs money right away.

It is also important to note that with tax season coming soon, the IRS will not call you.

“Don’t feel like you’re being rude or you’re in trouble if you hang up on those folks. Also, police departments will not call you to tell you that you have a warrant to take care of it over the phone. So, I would just say if something sounds too fishy just hang the phone up and then call the person back that you need to ask the questions to,” said Ward.

Never give out personal information over the phone unless you are absolutely positive it is being given to the right person.

If you are unsure, always err on the side of caution.
