LEBANON — Lebanon police warned the public Tuesday about a phone scam in which a caller is identifying himself as a Lebanon police officer and soliciting credit card information from the person who answers the phone.

Lebanon Police Chief Phil Roberts said that an unknown suspect is calling residents in the Upper Valley and southern New Hampshire posing as Lebanon Police Sgt. Brady Harwood and asking for “monetary payment for a warrant” and for the potential victim to provide bank or credit information.

The caller leaves a message and provides a telephone number to call to give the credit card information to, he said.

Roberts said his department was alerted to nearly half a dozen attempts of the scam call on Monday afternoon, but he said he is not aware of anyone having fallen victim to the scheme, Roberts told the Valley News. Roberts said the calls could be originating from anywhere and phone apps make tracing their origin impossible.

“Unfortunately, this is a common scam and the caller can be not even in the U.S.,” Roberts said. “There are so many different apps that can spoof phone numbers.”

Lebanon police ask that anyone who received the scam call or who may have fallen victim to it call the department at 603-448-1212.
