Rogers service restored to ‘vast majority’ of customers

The “vast majority” of Rogers customers have regained internet and phone service as of Saturday morning, according to a company statement.

Interac says its services are also now “fully available.”

There is no word yet on when the final Rogers customers will regain full service after a massive outage knocked out the telecommunications giant’s networks across Canada.

“Some customers may experience a delay” while traffic volumes return to pre-outage levels, according to a statement released at 7 a.m. Saturday.

Rogers president and CEO Tony Staffieri issued an apology for the outage on Friday night.

“We know you count on Rogers to connect you to emergency services, make payments, serve your customers, connect with work and keep in touch with friends and family,” Staffieri said. “Today we let you down. We can and will do better.”

Staffieri made “two commitments” to Rogers’ customers, saying the company will work “to fully understand the root cause of this outage” and make appropriate changes. He said a credit would be given to affected customers and he would “share more details shortly.” 

In an update on Saturday, Rogers said some customers are receiving scam text messages with credit offers for Friday’s outage.

“We are aware of scam text messages being sent claiming to offer credits in the wake of yesterday’s service interruptions,” Rogers wrote in a statement on Twitter.

“We will apply the credit proactively to your account and no action is required.”
