Scammer strikes twice

A Kelowna man is warning of a Christmas Grinch who is bilking people out of their hard-earned cash during the holiday season.

Ashton Light told Castanet this is not the first time he’s had people showing up at his door on Lynrick Road asking to complete an online Facebook Marketplace transaction.

“I just got another guy today. He drove in from Kamloops to pick up a washer and dryer,” Light said.

The latest victim of online scammers says he paid a $100 deposit and travelled to the address provided by the alleged scammer, which turned out to be Light’s home address.

Light said this is the second time he’s had people showing up at his door trying to complete an online transaction that had nothing to do with him.

“There’s no washer and dryer here, and the guy today is out his $100.”

Light said he spoke with the victim about the scam who he says went so far as to contact the place of business listed on the seller’s profile only to find that there is no one by that name who works at that business.

Light said the people who have been scammed have reported the incidents to Facebook but nothing gets done. “They can’t get their money back or anything.”

RCMP have issued multiple warnings about ‘buyer beware,’ but some people continue to take their chances.

“We want people to be looking out for scams or frauds at all times. The public needs to remain vigilant at all times,”…
