A new Netflix scam is attempting to swindle customers of the major streaming service.
A Mississauga resident has reported getting a text message informing them that a user was removed on their Netflix account.
The text prompts them to click a link for more information:
The text is not from Netflix, as tech-savvy users will likely infer from the strange lettering present in the link and in the word “removed.”
Netflix says it will never ask customers to enter their information in a text or email (including credit or debit card numbers, bank account details, and passwords).
The streaming service also says it will never request payment through a third-party vendor or website.
“Scammers can’t get information from you unless you give it to them. So don’t click any links in the messages or reply to them,” Netflix advises.
The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, which keeps track of major scams and fraud throughout the country, advises residents to never share personal or financial information with unverified people or groups.
That includes information such as your name, address, birth date, social insurance number, and credit card/banking information.
