NatWest warning about refund scam targeting app customers | Personal Finance | Finance

NatWest shared a warning on Twitter about the common ways scammers are trying to con people by making them think they are due a refund. The criminals call people pretending to be from the bank and encourage them to approve a payment in the app.

The bank said in its message: “You’re probably used to approving payments through your app by now.

“But you should know that scammers are trying to get round it and trick people into approving payments they haven’t made by telling them it’s a refund.

“These scammers are calling people and pretending to be from the bank, telling them to approve a refund in the app, lying about why the app says they’re approving a payment, stealing people’s money.”

The tweet included a video from the bank with further information urging customers to look out for signs of a “fishy” offer of a refund.

NatWest also said in the warning: “If you get a call out of the blue about a refund, it’s probably a scam.

“Especially if they talk about approving it through the app. Refunds are paid into your account automatically – so you’ll never need to use the app to approve them before you get the money.”
