Local church latest target in possible scam | News

The congregation at Corry First United Methodist Church on Worth Street received a visit on Tuesday afternoon from individuals who were allegedly offering to provide free tax services, and police say citizens should be aware of this “possible scam.”

Lisa White, administrative assistant at Corry First UMC, said some gentlemen came to the door, talked with the church’s pastor and claimed to be IRS agents who wanted to help them with free tax services.

White reported the incident to city police. 

“It was just strange,” she said. 

Corry First’s pastor, the Rev. Duk Hee Han, was on leave following the incident and unavailable for comment.

White said that following the visit, she reached out to other churches in the area to see whether other congregations had experienced anything similar.

“It’s just odd, because I did call a couple of churches to see if they had been approached, but no one has come forward,” she said.

White said she was sure to notify the police because she knows that especially the elderly population is being scammed with increasing frequency.

In a statement issued Thursday, police confirmed having heard complaints of a couple of unidentified males that were offering to do citizens’ taxes for free. 

The police department warns residents to watch out for potential scams.
