ATLANTA — Student loan debt in the United States totals $1.7 trillion. Nearly all of that ungodly total, roughly 93% of it ($1.6 trillion), is federal student loan debt. Federal student loan debt is spread across just under 43 million borrowers with an average loan balance of just under $38,000.
The rising costs of higher education, which have led to a greater prevalence people with student loan debt, has led politicians to begin offering ideas to help and/or solve this problem. In recent years, the idea of forgiving federal student loan debt has become an issue that high-level political figures can base campaigns on. *Cough* Elizabeth Warren *cough*.
