Fraud warning: Local man actually saw his bank account being drained on his cellphone bank app – Detroit Lakes Tribune

DETROIT LAKES — Becker County Sheriff Todd Glander is warning residents about a particularly alarming theft via cellphone.

On Sep. 2, Glander said he was contacted by a man who had received a phone call from what was portrayed to be a fraud alert from his local bank. The caller told the victim they were calling from a bank branch in Colorado to alert him of possible fraud on his bank account.

While the man was on the phone with whom he thought was his bank representative, he noticed funds were actively being withdrawn from his account while looking at his bank phone app.

In a short time, several hundred dollars were withdrawn from his account. The man became suspicious after the call ended and then called his bank, which confirmed he had been scammed by the caller from Colorado.

Glander advised people to “be aware of potential scams, and be vigilant in watching your credit card and bank accounts.” If you believe you are a victim of a scam, contact your credit card company, banking institution, or local law enforcement agency immediately.
