BHUBANESWAR: The economic offences wing (EOW) of the state Crime Branch here on Thursday arrested three persons, including a retired senior official and a current employee of Punjab National Bank (PNB), for allegedly defrauding the bank of Rs 3.68 crore.
The accused allegedly sanctioned Rs 3.5 crore loan to a company by fraudulently using the documents of another loan applicant in 2017. The accused were identified by the sleuths as PNB Bapuji Nagar branch’s former chief manager Birendra Pattnaik, field officer Narendra Nayak and a middleman, Prakash Kumar Behera. Srikant Prusty, a senior manager of PNB and a co-accused in the scam, is on the run.
The EOW said the accused allegedly sanctioned the loan in favour of Lingaraj Enterprises against the property mortgage (two residential duplexes) of another loan applicant, identified as Prasant Kumar Mohapatra, without his knowledge.
“Mohapatra approached the bank for a loan of Rs 10 lakh in 2017. He submitted all required documents and mortgaged his two duplexes near the bank to get the loan,” an EOW official said.
Subsequently, the accused bankers connived with Lingaraj Enterprises and sanctioned Rs 3.5 crore loan illegally to the company by using the mortgage document of Mohapatra. The loan account of Lingaraj Enterprises turned into a non-performing asset (NPA) in 2018 with the outstanding loan amount touching about Rs 3.68 crore.
