Cops Sound Alert On Loan App Frauds | Kolkata News

KOLKATA: The detective department of Kolkata Police has warned citizens against responding to fake WhatsApp messages offering money for loan repayment. Clicking on the links, warned cops, may give fraudsters an access to the data stored in the call recipient’s mobile.
Four persons involved in different forms of bank frauds, including loan app frauds, have been nabbed by the anti-bank fraud section of the detective department. According to the police, the accused are local conduits of organized Jamtara gangs and they arranged the SIM cards for the gangs to dupe people. Raids are still on in the city and other parts of the state to arrest the main members of the gangs running fake loan apps.

A woman from Chetla had received an extortion call for Rs 20 lakh after being offered a loan of Rs 11,000. In another case, a general manager of a private firm lost Rs 1.7 lakh after being tricked into accepting Rs 25 lakh loan for expanding his business. “People are receiving WhatsApp messages asking them to repay their loans by downloading a particular app and then clicking on a link sent in the message. It is a fake message and the recipients should refrain from clicking on such links received from unknown numbers. Stay safe, stay alert,” said cops in a statement.
