BBB highlights scams seen over the holidays

HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) – Scammers are ready to take advantage of people during the holiday season.

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) has compiled a list of its ‘12 Scams of Christmas’ that they typically see more during this time of year.

BBB’s Josh Planos said a lot of these scams are common but some are specifically designed around the holiday season.

“These are ploys to gain access to your personal and payment information and something to be on the lookout for because nobody is budgeting for a holiday scam,” Planos said.

Planos said most of these scams are avoidable by just exercising a few simple precautions.

“There are a lot of red flags to look out for but certainly it’s not something to go into without any knowledge or any education,” said Planos. “It is something that should be top of mind whenever you pull out a credit card or agree to make any sort of payment.”

Always exercise caution with social media ads promoting discounted items, holiday events, job opportunities, and donation requests, as well as direct messages from strangers. If you are asked to make a payment or donation by wire transfer, through a third party, or by prepaid debit or gift card, treat it as a red flag.
