AIB have issued an urgent scam alert – and warned customers NOT to put their bank cards in taxis.
The bank has warned customers to not put their cards into a taxi in a new scam they have been made aware of.
They explained that fraudsters have been pretending to call customers and pretending they are from AIB.
They will say that your card details are in the hands of criminals already, and that AIB have supposedly arranged for a taxi to collect your card from you.
A genuine taxi will then arrive and innocently deliver your card to the real criminals who now have access to your money.
In a statement to customers, AIB said: “Don’t put your bank card in a taxi.
“This may sound like a strange idea, but it shows the lengths fraudsters will go to get their hands on your card.
“We’ve heard about cases where a fraudster, pretending to be from AIB, calls or texts you to tell you your card details are already in the wrong hands of criminals and we (AIB) have arranged for a taxi to collect your card from you.”
They added: “A genuine taxi arrives, collects the card, and innocently delivers it into the hands of a real criminal.
“They now have access to the money in your account.”
