CANTON The Stark County Prosecutor’s Office and Better Business Bureau are warning Canton-area residents of two separate scams — one seeking money owed for a supposed bad check and the other claiming back taxes are due.
A phone scam is targeting some residents, claiming the individual who is called has written a bad check and faces arrest, Stark County Prosecutor Kyle Stone said in a news release Wednesday.
Residents have been receiving calls from a man claiming to be from the Stark County District Attorney’s Office, which doesn’t exist.
The scam caller has been described as being convincing and verbally aggressive.
The caller “alerts the individual that they, or someone in their immediate family, has written a bad check,” the news release said. “The caller tells the individual they need to send a specified amount of money to settle the bad check or the police will show up to their residence and arrest them, or their family member.
“The caller … even knows the banking information of those being targeted,” the prosecutor’s office said.
The Stark County Prosecutor’s Office never contacts residents to request payments of any kind, the news release said. Anyone who receives these calls should not provide personal or financial information.
