NEW LONDON, CT — Police have issued a warning about common scams that target seniors. Below is what police have to say about how to protect yourself.

Common Senior Fraud Schemes

Health Care / Medicare / Health Insurance Fraud

– In these types of scams, perpetrators may pose as a Medicare representative to get older people to give them their personal info.

“The Fake Accident / Arrest Ploy”

– The con artist gets the victim to wire or send money on the pretext that the person’s child or another relative is in the hospital or has been arrested and needs the money.

Email / Phishing Scams

– A senior receives email messages that appear to be from a legitimate company or institution, asking them to “update” or “verify” their personal information.

IRS Scam

– Scammers will call a taxpayer saying money is due and demand immediate payment via prepaid debit card, threatening arrest, deportation or loss of your driver’s license. If you have caller ID, the number may even show up as IRS. Callers threaten arrest if you don’t pay. Remember, the IRS does not use unsolicited email, text messages or any social media to discuss your personal tax issue. They will never demand immediate payment and they do not accept gift cards for payment. You should always check with the IRS before you pay any money.
